PRESCOTT — Repairs to Prescott’s main water line have been completed following an underground pipe failure that cut off water service across the city, local officials announced Monday.

Crews repaired the ruptured 8-inch main and poured fast-curing concrete around the water line for structural support. As of 2:43 p.m. Monday, officials were waiting for the concrete to set, a process expected to take about four hours.

Once the concrete cures, workers will flush water through fire hydrants to clear sediment from the lines before refilling the city tank. Water service to residents is expected to be restored by 9 p.m. today (Monday).

When service resumes, a mandatory boil-water advisory will be in effect for an estimated two to three days. The advisory will remain in place while city officials submit water samples for laboratory testing to confirm the supply is safe for human consumption.

Mayor Karen Gleason said additional bottled water is being secured and will be made available to residents on the sidewalk outside the Tuxedo Bar and Grill, 105 South D Street, in Prescott.

The disruption began after an 8-inch pipe burst between the well pump house and holding tank, carving out a 10-by-10-foot water-filled crater and sending a large volume of water across a local roadway. Walla Walla County Emergency Management was notified, and the Red Cross was placed on standby to assist with emergency drinking water supplies.

Crews and community members drained the flooded crater to identify the leak. While initial efforts to locate replacement parts locally were unsuccessful, A-1 Plumbing transported heavy excavation equipment and brought in necessary materials from Pasco to complete the repair work.
