Prepare for chain inspections on I-84 east of Pendleton Nov. 7

PENDLETON – (Release from the Oregon Department of Transportation) To prepare for winter weather and its associated hazards, ODOT will conduct a chain inspection on Interstate 84 eastbound at milepost 217, east of Pendleton, on Nov. 7.
This event is aimed at educating semi-truck drivers and other towing vehicles about chain-up requirements and promoting proper use to reduce the risk of crashes and spinouts. “We experience several extended freeway closures during winter due to vehicles not chaining up when required,” said ODOT District 12 Manager Rich Lani.
What drivers can expect Nov. 7
Beginning at milepost 213, where U.S. 30 crosses under I-84, here is what you will see:
- Reduced speeds to 55 mph.
- Variable Message Signs directing trucks and other towing vehicles to the right lane.
- Cones separating right and left lanes on approach to the inspection site at milepost 217.
ODOT staff, Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers, and OSP will ask questions about your equipment at the inspection site. This process will take no more than 15 seconds, and we will keep the line moving as quickly as possible.
We will continue holding similar events as long as the highway remains clear and dry.
Real-time winter inspections
When bad weather finally arrives, we will begin conducting regular chain inspections at milepost 217. Drivers with the appropriate traction devices can install them, undergo inspection, and continue their journey. Drivers who do not have the correct equipment will be sent back to the Exit 216 interchange to address the issues or return west on I-84.
“Chain inspections help reduce the number of closures that have a huge impact on other travelers, commercial deliveries, and all emergency service providers and maintenance crews who work in hazardous conditions to keep the highways safe,” Lani said.
To support ongoing chain inspections, we are working on a project to enhance safety and traffic control during severe weather conditions. This project is scheduled to be completed in a couple of months. Once finished, drivers will notice the following improvements:
- Notifications to reduce speed.
- Variable message signs warning drivers of highway closures.
- Automated gates directing traffic to exit the highway at Exit 216.
- An area designated for chain installation and inspection.
Be prepared
All travelers are urged to be prepared for winter conditions when traveling through mountain passes and designated snow zones. Familiarize yourself with chain requirements and observe state laws regarding carrying and installing chains, and the use of proper traction tires on personal vehicles. Chain inspection operations will be expanded to additional sites as needed.
