PRAIRIE CITY – Prairie City School’s Farm-to-School program began last year, and has gained some steam according to Superintendent Casey Hallgarth:

“We purchased two pigs, two steers and thirty-five chickens. The whole premise behind this is to make our cafeteria self-sufficient. We provide our own, we grow our own and we feed our own.”

Lindy Cruise runs the Ag Program at PCHS, while Amanda Rockhill works with students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. The students are involved in the entire process. That could mean activities like planting vegetables, or for the older students, building fence. Hallgarth said that many of the kids claim it’s their favorite part of the school day.
