PENDLETON – The Pendleton Police Department is purchasing a crime statistics package that will include a map for the public of where crimes are occurring. Chief Chuck Byram says the new service will also aid police in criminal investigations.

“One of the components of this system allows for residents within our community to register home security systems on a strictly voluntary basis,” Byram said.

Those who do volunteer could help taking a bite out of crime.

“If and when we have an issue or a criminal event within that neighborhood, the system will show us which houses have those security systems so that we can go and do a knock on the door and say, ‘Hey, can we review your system for any type of evidence,’” Byram said.

The city of Hermiston already operates the mapping system for its area. It can be viewed at https://hpd.crimegraphics.com/2013/default.aspx.
