PENDLETON – The Pendleton Police Department is not one of those law enforcement agencies that offers hiring bonuses to experienced officers. Chief Chuck Byram said that approach has been considered, and rejected.
“What about all the people that we already have on staff,” he wondered. “Are we going to pay retention bonuses to them just for staying on with us instead of moving around? Then it seems like, more and more, all you’re doing is hiring mercenaries.”
Byram added that he knows money is an important motivator, but he says he wants to hire people looking for something more than a paycheck.
“We want people that want to come work for us,” he said. “We pay a good wage. We have a great community. We want them to be involved in the community. It’s not just all about money. Obviously, money is an aspect to any job, but we want people that are more than just about the money. We will continue to look for those people.”
The new budget that went into effect July 1 provides funding for two additional police officers.
