PENDLETON – Before being named chief of the Pendleton Police Department, Chuck Byram was a lieutenant, one of two for the department. He said Stuart Roberts traditionally had only one lieutenant until the years leading up to his retirement.

“He was looking forward more to when he was going to retire,” Byram said. “That’s why he created the second lieutenant position to make it a little bit easier for the transition when it did occur.”

Byram said that not filling the second lieutenant position gives him some room to answer one of the department’s more serious needs.

“What we do see a need for is another criminal detective,” he said. “That’s where we’re going to put that body once I get another one hired and up and running.”

Tony Nelson is the remaining police lieutenant.
