BOARDMAN – A presentation was made at last week’s city council from the city parks master plan’s public advisory committee (PAC), with Carla McLane giving the presentation. It discussed two contests: one to design a park, and the other to name currently unnamed city parks.

The PAC suggested that they would select a single park to be selected for the design challenge, which the high school had expressed interest in for which their students to be involved. The nominated parks discussed were Zuzu Park, River Ridge subdivision parks, Hillview Park and City Park. McLane suggested Zuzu because it was more of a “blank slate.” The council suggested that younger kids, not just high-school students, should have more input since they would be the ones using park equipment the most.

The park naming contest was originally proposed to be for school children and community members to make suggestions. Council members discussed having younger kids more involved in the park naming contest as well, as opposed to all community members. One suggestion was that each school in the city be responsible for naming a certain park

The parks that were discussed for naming were the River Ridge subdivision parks, Hillview Park, Park Blocks and City Hall Park.

Judging for the park design would be done by a city council member, a parks district board member and three members of the public advisory committee before it goes before the full council for approval. The council approved Brenda Profitt to be their representative for the judging. The park naming would have the public advisory committee select the finalists, with the council selecting winners.
