HERMISTON – Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston says his officers have been seeking Jeffrey Poirier, 40, since an incident on Feb. 17 at the Cozy Corner Tavern. Early this morning (Wednesday) Poirier was taken to the Umatilla County Jail on an unrelated outstanding warrant. Charges from Hermiston are in the list of allegations on the roster.
“I requested SPD advise Poirier of his Miranda Rights and ask if he wished to speak to me regarding this case,” Edmiston wrote in an email. “He declined.”
HPD reports indicate that on Feb. 17, officers responded to a call at the tavern on East Main Street for a report of a fight. A female reported that Jeffrey Poirier, her ex-boyfriend, was punching people. She then alleged that Poirier stole her car keys by using a knife to cut them off the lanyard on her wrist. He then took her car.
“When officers arrived, Poirier took off in the stolen car, a gray 2014 Ford Escape bearing Oregon plates 621NLN, towards Stanfield,” the report states.
Officers terminated the pursuit when they lost sight of the vehicle. The victim signed the vehicle as stolen.
Poirier is facing charges of first-degree robbery, felony unauthorized use of a vehicle, and felony attempt to elude. Misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, menacing, harassment, and disorderly conduct are also being brought. Those charges were emailed by HPD to the jail so they could be served on Poirier when he arrived.
