Plastics recycling returns to Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA – Residents in Walla Walla can now resume placing number 1, 2 and 5 bottles (eight ounces or larger), jugs (milk, laundry, etc.), tubs (dairy, coffee, etc.; no clear tubs), buckets and flower pots with ridges (no lids, no handles) into their recycling container.

Lids are not accepted for recycling, and need to be removed from any plastic items before the plastic items go into the recycling container.

These materials, along with paper, cardboard, and aluminum and tin containers, will be baled and transported to a material recovery facility, where they will be separated and sent to companies that process them to create new products.

City staff asks residents to look at every item placed into the recycling container to ensure it is on the list of materials that are accepted for recycling. Staff inspecting the contents of recycling containers have seen things like garden hoses, clothing, tires, furniture, food, foam board, car parts, branches, and toys. These types of items are not recyclable and should be disposed of properly.

People should make sure all materials are clean and dry. Dirty or soiled items are not accepted by the material recovery facility, and must be thrown away.

Questions about recycling should be directed to Basin Disposal, Inc. (BDI) at 509-547-2476. Customers who have billing questions can call customer service at 509-527-4479.
