PILOT ROCK – Pilot Rock Secondary School went into lockdown protocol briefly Tuesday morning, while Pilot Rock Elementary School simultaneously entered a “secure” action, formerly known as a lockout.

The Pilot Rock School District said the lockdown began at 8:04 a.m. Local law enforcement conducted a sweep of the premises and deemed the buildings and grounds safe. The schools then returned to their normal schedules, and all students and staff were accounted for.

The Pilot Rock Police Department responded to the scene alongside Oregon State Police and the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said they are investigating the cause of the lockdown but have not released further details.

“We are proud of our students and staff for following all procedures,” said Pilot Rock police said in a statement.

District Superintendent Troy Jerome also praised the school community’s composure.

“I am incredibly proud of how our Pilot Rock school community handled today’s situation,” Jerome said. “Our students and staff did a great job following our emergency procedures; their composure allowed law enforcement to do their jobs quickly and effectively.”

District officials said the safety of the school community remains their highest priority and encouraged parents to speak with their children about the morning’s events. Counseling staff will be available on campus for students who need additional support.
