JOHN DAY – Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site Curator Don Meritt was in the Elkhorn Media Group newsroom in John Day, discussing the next steps for the incoming interpretive center. According to Meritt, it’s going to be a BIG addition to the site:

“We hired and architect, who is on board now from COLE Architecture. They’re out of Bend, and they will be leading the design phase of this though our Oregon State Parks Project Manager Tina Ely.

The building, right now, we have it designed to be about 8,500 square feet, which is three times larger than what we have currently.”

Meritt said the new facility will include a conference room, a federally recognized curation facility and research lab, more restrooms, and a “great hall” space. He said the plan is for groundbreaking on the project to begin in the fall of 2024, and for the grand opening to be held sometime in 2026.
