PORTLAND – Portland General Electric Company (PGE) announced an agreement to acquire PacifiCorp’s Washington state utility operations for $1.9 billion, a move that will expand PGE’s footprint to approximately 140,000 new customers.
The acquisition includes three major power generation facilities: the 477-megawatt Chehalis natural-gas plant, the 94-megawatt Goodnoe Hills wind facility near Goldendale, and the 234-megawatt Marengo I and II wind facilities near Dayton. Additionally, PGE will take ownership of 4,500 miles of transmission and distribution lines covering a 2,700-square-mile service area.
To manage the expansion, PGE will form a new subsidiary regulated by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. The company committed to retaining current Washington employees and honoring existing labor agreements. Shared corporate functions will support operations in both Oregon and Washington.
Officials emphasized that customers in both states will not be responsible for costs related to the acquisition or its financing. The transaction is subject to state and federal regulatory reviews, which are expected to take approximately 12 months to complete following the submission of official filings.
