PENDLETON — The former St. Anthony Medical Office Building, a long-standing fixture at 1600 SE Court Place, is slated for demolition following years of structural decay and persistent security issues, officials confirmed Friday.
Community Counseling Solutions (CCS) Executive Director Kimberly Lindsay told Elkhorn Media Group that the nonprofit organization has decided to raze the structure rather than attempt a costly restoration. The decision marks the end of a troubled chapter for the property, which was sold by CHI St. Anthony Hospital shortly after its relocation to Pendleton’s Southgate in December 2013.
The building’s decline accelerated significantly following a 2021 incident in which vandals broke into the facility and left water running on the third floor.
“Given that water runs down, it did some damage to the third floor, more damage to the second floor and a lot to the first floor,” Lindsay said.
In addition to the extensive water damage, the building’s elevator is inoperable. Replacing the system is a required but cost-prohibitive hurdle for the organization. CCS has also struggled with ongoing trespassing, noting that individuals continue to break into the vacant site despite security efforts.
“We need people there every day,” Lindsay added, noting that the current state of the building prevents a remodel that would meet the agency’s operational needs.
While the current structure is coming down, the site will remain central to the organization’s mission. CCS eventually plans to develop a new facility on the lot to co-locate its mental health and addiction services, streamlining care for the community.
