Pendleton offers new grant for apartments in the urban renewal district

PENDLETON – Pendleton Development Commission Associate Director Charles Denight is offering property owners in the urban renewal district the chance to file for a grant to establish energy-efficient apartment units.
Denight has agreed to coordinate the local grant application process with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). That agency has a little over $200 million in federal funds for restoration or renovation of older buildings for housing that uses materials that release less greenhouse gas into the environment.
Denight said four developers already applied for the grants and others have expressed interest in the funding.
“That program provides $45,000 per unit to install apartments,” Denight said. So, somebody who is installing 10 apartments can get $450,000 as a grant.”
Denight said the developer is helped with the renovation.
“DEQ has hired an agency – a nonprofit – that provides all kinds of guidance to the building owners so they know what kind of products to use,” he said.
The properties that have already applied for the DEQ grants are Edwards Apartments on Southeast Dorion Avenue and the Ladow Block on Southeast Court Avenue.
