PENDLETON – The Northwest National Boxing Finals happens this weekend at the Pendleton Convention Center. The amateur event features both minors and adults, males and females. The action starts each day at 2 p.m.
Organizer Rob Brooks of the Pendleton Boxing Club said amateur boxing is nothing like the sport as portrayed by professionals and in the movies.
“The longest round we’re going to have for this show should be two minutes,” he said. “The little guys only have a minute, so hands fly the whole time.”
Brooks said that unlike the pros who spend 10 rounds looking for a knock out, the winners of these events usually do it by amassing the most points.
He has hopes of making this a regular event and praised businesses and individuals throughout the area for support in making it happen. The trophies for winners will have a distinctly Western flavor. On the first day, there will be buckles from the Pendleton Round-Up for the male and female outstanding boxers.
“On the second night, Woodrow Starr from Hamley’s is doing some leatherwork for us for championship belts for the male and female boxers of the tournament and the masters boxers of the tournament,” Brooks said.
There are 200 boxers registered to participate. Admission is $10 a day. There are some VIP tables still available. For more information, contact Brooks at 509-845-4574.
