PENDLETON – The Pendleton Convention Center will be the scene of the Oregon Republican Party’s convention next month. PCC General Manager Pat Beard says six state organizations have chosen to hold their events at the convention center this year.
He thinks it’s related in part to the atmosphere of larger cities following the pandemic.
“I think as Portland and other large communities see challenges post-COVID, Pendleton then becomes that divergent eddy in the big stream of life that is welcoming, safe, and has incredible amenities,” he said.
Beard said that Pendleton is easy to get to, has a large number of motel rooms and restaurants, and attractions. He adds that even more groups will be attracted if a hotel is added to the property.
“It’s not if, it’s when,” he said. “It’s a complete next step for the community. There are so many events that we can’t bid on because it requires attached lodging.”
Beard said the efforts to locate a hotel on the campus is currently on hold, as the creation of Blue Mountain Community College’s FARM II project is the current main concern. He said once it’s completed, the indoor arena at FARM II will allow the convention center to bring larger agricultural conventions to Pendleton and operate as an adjacent facility.
