PENDLETON – The Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter received a $20,000 grant from Walmart on Tuesday. Shaindel Beers accepted the grant check on behalf of the shelter, after she had applied for it with a video showing repairs the shelter needed.
“We unfortunately had some dogs get injured from our aging kennels, they would get their paw caught where welds were coming loose,” Beers said. “They were built in 2015 and they’ve just had wear and tear.”
The grant accepted Tuesday was actually the second check the shelter received from Walmart. Beers says the shelter was awarded the original grant for $20,000, but then received an additional $20,000. She says any money left over from the dog kennel repairs would go to additional projects such as repairs for the cat kennels.
Beers says animal shelters across the nation have faced additional stress after the COVID shutdowns.
“No unnecessary medical or veterinary procedures were done and so that includes spay and neuter, so nationally 2.7 million animals missed spay and neuter appointments,” she said. “So that means millions of extra animals have been born.”
She said that not only means animals are kept in the pound longer before the shelter is able to adopt them out, but they’ve also seen longer wait times for adoptions
Beers says anything that can be done to help a shelter is welcome from the public.
“If you can adopt, please adopt,” she said. “If you can foster, foster. If you aren’t able to do those things, volunteering, donating, even offering to drive animals to the vet.”
