PENDLETON – The Pendleton City Council has voted in favor of amending the city’s sign ordinance to set a different standard for signs in the downtown historic district. There was a petition with over 100 signatures of people opposed to the change. Mayor John Turner said that was due to the false belief that all signs would have to come down.
“If you have a sign up on your building right now, it’s grandfathered in,” he said. “It’s good. There’s not going to be anybody to come up to you and say, ‘Hey, you have to change this sign.’”
The changes in the ordinance would ensure that signage within the historic district downtown would reflect more of the history of the buildings in that district. It does not apply to signs in other parts of the city. The change was the work of the Pendleton Historical Preservation Commission and was also approved by the Pendleton Planning Commission.
The sign code changes are attached to the agenda for the Nov. 19 council meeting at https://cityofpendletonor.civicweb.net/Portal/MeetingInformation.aspx?Org=Cal&Id=8049.
