Pendleton After School Program moves to rec center

PENDLETON – The Pendleton After School program is moving to the Pendleton Recreation Center next to city hall this year. The program, which is relatively new, had operated programs out of each school previously.

“We will bus the kids from the school sites over to the recreation center,” Parks And Rec Director Liam Hughes said. “The program ends at 5:30 p.m. and their parents will pick them up there at the center.”

The program is for students in first through fifth grades. The cost is $15 a day or $60 a week. Scholarships are available. Drop ins can no longer be accepted, because the bus company needs to plan for transportation. Parents are asked to notify the school as soon as possible of a day a parent wants a child to attend. Students must be registered by the day before they are attending.

Hughes said participants enjoy a physical activity, a snack, and then participate in a special project.

“Some days we’ll have a science project or an art project,” he said. “One of the days I went in they were making batteries out of lemons and aluminum foil.”

Other activities include staff to help with homework completion, weekly trips to the library, and unstructured playtime in a safe environment.

Pendleton Parks and Recreation directs parents of kindergarten students to contact the Pendleton Children’s Center, which is right down the street from the Pendleton Early Learning Center. Registration forms for the program for grades 1-5 are available through McKay Creek, Sherwood Heights, and Washington elementary schools.
