KIMBERLY, OR – John Day Fossil Beds National Monument Chief Paleontologist Dr. Nicholas Famoso recently informed our newsroom that the paleontology team at the park has uncovered a new prehistoric species unique to this area:

“It’s a little thing called a Palaeogale—cute little guy, it’s about the size of a medium-sized weasel. It’s the first one of its kind found in Oregon.”

Dr. Famoso noted that the Palaeogale was found in the Sheep Rock unit of the fossil beds. He said a paper has been accepted on their findings. Find more on the park by visiting www.nps.gov/joda.
