HERMISTON – Fifth-grade students in Hermiston have begun Outdoor School this week. The event varies from district to district, but is usually held in the spring. Hermiston School Superintendent Tricia Mooney said they’ve tried both and have opted for fall this year.
“When we have Outdoor School in the fall, it’s a different opportunity to connect with our students and form different relationships that then can be leveraged throughout the remainder of the year,” she said.
Mooney said that holding it early doesn’t just help teachers relate to their students, it also helps the fifth graders.
“They have the opportunity to create those bonds and those relationships that throughout the course of the school year come in handy when we’re doing things in the classroom that can be really difficult,” she said.
