UNION COUNTY — Rural Oregon fire crews demonstrated both swift response and collaborative skills July 16. At approximately 5:45 p.m., an outbuilding fire on Starr Lane was reported to the La Grande Rural Fire Protection District who immediately responded. Crews from the City of La Grande Fire Department, the Imbler Rural Fire Department and the Oregon Department of forestry similarly responded, with the City of La Grande being the first suppression crew on scene. In total, crews were on scene for approximately two hours.
No injuries were reported, and a preliminary estimate puts the damages at several thousand dollars with a full fire report still being drafted. It was noted that prior collaborative training between districts and the general ability of the crews to cooperate with one another helped firefighting proceed unimpeded.
