OSP Bomb techs investigate suspected dynamite and blasting caps in Union

UNION – (Author’s note. The image used for this article is NOT a depiction of the specific technicians that responded, but rather generally of the protective suits used by OSP’s bomb disposal unit in dangerous situations. The image was specifically posted by OSP in 2021.)

Last week, two Oregon State Police (OSP) bomb technicians responded to a Union property over a report of blasting caps and suspected dynamite. The investigation occurred at around 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at a Bellwood Street address.

Ultimately, twelve electrical copper caps were recovered and safely disposed of, while the supposed box of dynamite was, thankfully, found to be full of paint, not explosives, following a scan of the container. As summarized by OSP in a recent press log:

“On Wednesday May 27, 2026 two OSP bomb technicians responded to a property in Union, OR to a report of blasting caps and dynamite. Twelve electric copper caps were recovered and later disposed of. The box of reported dynamite was x-rayed and contained four 1-gallon paint cans. BATS ID # 1595208.”

Why the caps were present at the property and how the container was suspected of containing explosives was not explained by OSP in the initial report.
