WILSONVILLE – The Oregon State Activities Association (OSAA) voted to make boys volleyball an officially sanctioned sport at their Monday assembly meeting.

Boys’ volleyball has been an “emerging activity” for two years with 68 teams competing mostly from the west side of the state, a potential factor when schools in the eastern half of Oregon decide whether to add it as a sport.

Stanfield Secondary School Athletic Director Lorena Woods said travel was one reason her school did not have any plans to add the sport. Of the other area schools that Elkhorn Media Group reached out to the most common answer was that the boys’ volleyball debut date of spring of 2026 was too early to introduce a new sport, but that schools would gauge interest for possible future inclusion.

Baker Athletics Director Simon Lamson said there is some student interest at Baker High School, and they’ve been working to identify other nearby school districts that may have interest in creating local competition.

Oregon becomes the 26th state to have boys’ volleyball as a sanctioned activity, and it was the first to be added through OSAA’s emerging activity process. Girls flag football is currently in its second year in the emerging activity process and could become a sanctioned sport as soon as October 2026.
