Oregon’s federalized troops are in limbo

SALEM – When President Donald Trump activated Oregon National Guard soldiers for
duty in Portland, 200 soldiers volunteered. Since then, a U.S. District Court Judge in
Portland has issued two rulings that block that activation.

Judge Karin Immergut, who was appointed to the bench by President Trump in his first
term, has ruled that no National Guard soldiers from any state can be sent to Oregon.
That countered a move by the Pentagon to send troops from California and Texas to
Portland.

We asked the Oregon National Guard what that means for the original volunteers, many
of whom are from Eastern and Central Oregon.

“The Oregon Guard members remain in a Title-10 status under U.S. Army North, but are
not performing any duties or responsibilities at this time,” Lt. Col. Stephen Bomar,
Oregon National Guard director of public affairs, replied.

Immergut’s order expires in two weeks unless it is extended at a hearing scheduled for
Oct. 17.
