BAKER COUNTY – Deer on the road is a common occurrence in any rural area. Cows on the road are somewhat less so but are far from rare. The Oregon State Police recently responded to another cow vs car crash in Eastern Oregon. The crash occurred at roughly 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1 along U.S. Highway 26, near milepost 202.5 Westbound, near Unity. The OSP description of the crash (as listed in a recent press log) is as follows:

“SP responded to a single vehicle crash on highway 26, at milepost 202.5. a white 2002 Ford Taurus hit a cow in the westbound lane, causing the vehicle to become disabled and the cow to be deceased. No injuries were reported. OSP called for a no-preference tow, which the driver later declined. The vehicle and cow were removed from the roadway by a citizen passing by. The driver was cited for no insurance.”

As a reminder, much of Eastern Oregon falls either partially or fully under open-range jurisdiction, increasing the likelihood of Livestock on the roadway. Baker County in particular contains both open-range and livestock district lands.
