BAKER & GRANT COUNTIES — The Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project in Baker and Grant counties will benefit from funding recently awarded to Southern Oregon University. The America 250 Oregon Commission announced that Southern Oregon University’s Laboratory of Anthropology received a grant that will “…support a series of free public programs and pop-up exhibits during SOULA’s summer field school, sharing archaeological research with rural communities through events, performances, and accessible interpretive materials.”
America 250 Oregon Commission Chair Kerry Tymchuk said “…these grants represent Oregon’s commitment to commemorating America’s 250th birthday in ways that reflect the unique character of our state.”
SOULA’s Public Archaeology and Remote Sensing Field School is a four-week course where a team conducts archaeological investigations with the award-winning Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project.
According to SOULA, the class this year will take place on multiple sites in Eastern Oregon, where team members will, “follow the dusty trails of Chinese American cowboys, excavate in a once-booming ghost town, and get a taste of the history of some of Oregon’s early Chinese American restaurants.”
The field school will run from June 29 through July 24, 2026.
