SALEM – When the 83rd session of the Oregon Legislature convenes on Jan. 21, 2025, the Democrats will hold super majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. That means if voting follows party lines, the 2/3 majority can institute new taxes.
Pendleton Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Cheri Rosenberg-LaBoy said super majorities for either political party are bad news. That means there is no reason for lawmakers to work with the opposing party to reach compromises.
She said the only option is for the people to get involved, communicating not just with their personal representatives or senators but also expressing their feelings to lawmakers from outside their own regions.
“You may not stop something, but instead of 10 percent maybe we get them down to five,” she said. “That’s why it’s just so, so important to be engaged, be engaged, be engaged.” Information about the legislators, committees, and proposed bills can be accessed at https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/Pages/session.aspx.
