Ontario Volunteer Firefighters Assn. urges wildfire prevention

ONTARIO — The Ontario Volunteer Firefighters Association has offered the public ten different wildland safety tips to prevent wildfire.

-Tip #1: Don’t Park on Dry Grass

Your vehicle’s hot exhaust system can ignite dry vegetation in minutes. Park only on gravel, pavement, or dirt whenever possible.

-Tip #2: Drown Campfires Completely

Before leaving your campsite:

Pour water on the fire.

Stir the ashes.

Pour more water.

Feel for heat. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.

-Tip #3: Skip Fireworks in Dry Areas

Even “safe and sane” fireworks can start devastating wildfires. Attend a professional fireworks show instead.

-Tip #4: Keep a Shovel & Water Nearby

If you’re burning where it’s allowed, always have a shovel and a water source immediately available.

-Tip #5: Secure Trailer Chains

Dragging trailer safety chains can create sparks that ignite roadside grass.

-Tip #6: Check Local Fire Restrictions

Fire danger changes quickly. Know current restrictions before burning, camping, or using equipment outdoors.

-Tip #7: Mow Early

Avoid mowing during the hottest, driest part of the day. Metal blades striking rocks can create sparks.

-Tip #8: Never Toss Cigarettes

Cigarettes should never be thrown from a vehicle or onto the ground. Make sure they’re completely extinguished.

Tip #9: Create Defensible Space

Keep grass mowed, remove dead vegetation, and trim tree branches away from your home to help protect it from wildfire.

Tip #10: Report Smoke Immediately

If you see smoke or flames where they shouldn’t be, call 911 right away. Early reporting can stop a small fire from becoming a major wildfire.
