Ontario Police report another round of DMV impersonation scams

ONTARIO – The Ontario Police Department (OPD) is reporting another round of DMV Scam/impersonation texts being circulated. Like previous scams, these texts claim to be from the State of Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), claim the victim is late on some form of outstanding payment or fine, and threaten immediate penalties or restrictions if payment is not provided by a short deadline.

Ontario residents, or anyone that may have received similar texts or calls, are reminded that the DMV will never contact them via phone/text demanding immediate payment or threatening penalties. This is a scam!

As with all impersonation scams, be they utilities, law enforcement, or other agencies, the scammers attempt to panic the victims into sending money or giving away personal/financial details through some form of fraudulent link, phone number, or payment method. If you receive a message/call you believe may be a scam, remember the following:

  • DO NOT give out personal or financial information to anyone.
  • Do not click any links sent in suspicious messages.
  • Claims of financial penalties, service cutoffs, legal action and other threats are not normal for professional agencies/businesses. These are meant to cause panic.
  • If you’re unsure if a call or message is legitimate, call the DMV (or other agency the message claims to be from) directly via public phone numbers to verify the information. DO NOT use numbers or contact methods provided by the suspected scammer.

The Ontario PD reminds residents that online/text scams can be reported via the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at: https://www.ic3.gov/
