Ontario and Vale School Districts receive over $175,000 to support grade school English tutoring.

MALHEUR COUNTY – The Oregon Department of Education recently announced the latest recipients of High-Dosage Tutoring (HDT) Supplement funds. In total, 48 schools across the state will receive a combined 12 million dollars for the 2025-2027 school years to support core literacy instruction for students that need support. As explained by the ODE in a recent announcement:

“High-dosage tutoring is an evidence-based support, provided in addition to core literacy instruction, that allows students extra time and assistance to practice foundational literacy skills in small groups or one-on-one with a highly-trained tutor.”

In Eastern Oregon, the Vale and Ontario School Districts were selected to receive a combined $175,104.23. More specifically, Vale will receive $5,690.89 for 2025-2026, and $5,923.17 for 2026-2027 for a total of $11,614.06 in tutoring funds. Ontario was granted a larger allocation at $80,110.18 for 2025-2026 and $83,379.99 for 2026-2027, for a total of $163,490.17 in tutoring funds.

According to the ODE, the HDT Supplement funds were initially allocated during the 2025 legislative session to better support statewide literacy efforts. Funds were allocated for the highest-need schools based on 3^rd-5^th grade English language arts proficiency. Funding is allocated at a ratio of approximately $3,000 dollars per student for 15% of 3^rd-5^th grade students in each eligible district who are not proficient on state standardized tests.
