ENTERPRISE — The glow of the big screen may soon return to the historic OK Theater, thanks to a community-wide fundraising effort thatโs already gaining momentum.
After years of hosting concerts, performances, and community events, the beloved theater is working toward installing the equipment needed to show films once again. That includes a new projector system, screen, media server, and updated soundโan investment estimated at $60,000.
So far, more than half of that goal has already been raised, thanks in part to a generous early donation that jumpstarted the campaign. Cody Sheehy, a documentary filmmaker and Wallowa County native, is helping lead the effort alongside OK Theater owner Darrell Brann and the Brann family, Chris Geyer, and Jenny Hawkins.
โFor me, going to the OK Theater as a kid was the highlight of my childhood,โ Sheehy said. โIt wasnโt just the films that inspired meโit was the sense of belonging to a community that was seated all around me as the lights dimmed. Helping to bring that magic back for families today is really exciting.โ
To keep the momentum going, organizers have turned to both grassroots and creative fundraising. Community members can contribute online at the Ok Theatreโs Facebook page or at the local STCU branch with a check made to the OK Theater for โprojector.โ On September 18th, M.Crow and Dave Yost hosted a pie auction that raised $12,720 for the cause.
With more than $42,000 now raised, the project is closer than ever to becoming reality. If successful, the OK Theater plans to bring back classic, family-friendly films, while also creating a welcoming space for the community to gather.
โItโs about more than movies,โ Sheehy added. โItโs about giving Wallowa County another place to come together.โ
