PASCO – An armed suspect who was shot by a Pasco police officer after allegedly fatally stabbing another man died at a local hospital, according to the Special Investigations Unit.
Officers Jasen McClintock and Jeremy Jones with the Pasco Police Department responded separately at about 11:40 a.m. Sunday along with other officers to a reported physical altercation between two adult males near Sixth Avenue and West Lewis Street. One of the men, Gabriel Artz, of Pasco, was reportedly armed with a knife.
When the officers arrived at the scene, one adult male was found lying on the ground with apparent stab wounds. Pasco officers rendered medical aid to the injured man, who later died at the scene. The SIU has confirmed the identity of the homicide victim but has yet to be able to contact next of kin.
McClintock and Jones attempted to establish verbal communication with Artz who was still in the immediate vicinity of the homicide. In their efforts to communicate and to deescalate the contact, officers used deadly force against Artz when he appeared to initiate an attack on the officers.
Pasco officers immediately rendered first aid to Artz until Pasco Fire Department members arrived and transported Artz to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland where he was pronounced deceased. McClintock has been with the Pasco Police Department since 2008. Jones has been with the department since 2006.
