VALE- (Release from the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office) On Saturday, June 7, 2025, at approximately 9:27 p.m., a Malheur County Sheriffโs Deputy responded to a report of an assault in the town of Harper.
During the investigation, the deputy attempted to serve a citation to 54-year-old Eli E. Reiter, a Harper resident. The situation escalated when Mr. Reiter threw a piece of lumber at the deputy. When the deputy attempted to place Mr. Reiter under arrest, he resisted. The deputy deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. An altercation followed, during which Mr. Reiter assaulted the deputy.
As the incident continued to escalate, Mr. Reiter picked up a hammer and advanced toward the deputy.. The deputy then discharged his firearm, striking Mr. Reiter.
Deputies provided emergency medical aid until the arrival of paramedics. Despite lifesaving efforts, Mr. Reiter died from his injuries.
The Oregon State Police are leading an independent investigation into the incident. Additional details will be released as the investigation allows.
Per standard protocol, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Malheur County District Attorneyโs Office for review
