SALEM – The Oregon Firearms Federation is mystified by a bill introduced in the Oregon Legislature from Sen. Brian Boquist (I-Dallas). Senate Bill 993 is, in the eyes of the federation, is incomprehensible.
The proposed measure would make it a crime to carry an unholstered handgun. It would also make trespassing with a firearm a felony. Finally, the bill requires a public database be established of all persons convicted of a crime involving a firearm.
The federation, plaintiff in the Harney County suit to stop the enforcement of Oregon’s Ballot Measure 114, said in a news release, that would hurt people who are not criminals.
“It makes it a crime to carry an unholstered handgun,” the news release stated. “That means a gun in your car, in a purse, or in your pocket would be a felony. It also makes trespass with a firearm a felony. That means that if a hunter accidentally strays onto private property, they are felons and lose their gun rights.”
Boquist is a former Republican who now describes himself on his website as “an independent constitutional republican values voice for the people in rural Polk and Yamhill Counties who want the individual, family and small business freedoms.” OFF said the fact that Boquist has contributed to the fight against Oregon’s recently passed gun control law makes it “impossible to fathom” what he hopes to gain from Senate Bill 993.
