LA GRANDE – While the Oregon Department of Transportation gets ready for winter weather conditions, Public Information Officer Tom Strandberg reminds motorists that they need to be alert whenever they’re behind the wheel, not just when there are snow and ice.

Recently Interstate 84 experienced two separate commercial motor vehicle crashes that shut the highway down for hours each time. Both times, the weather was clear and the roads were dry.

“There doesn’t need to be snow or ice on the ground for those crashes to occur,” Strandberg said. “We just remind people to plan for the unexpected.”

Closures due to roads being blocked or hazardous materials being dealt with can last for a long time. Strandberg said that whenever a person is on the road, it’s wise to make sure their gas tank is full, and their phone batteries are charged.
