Release from the Union County Retired Educators Association:

Guest speaker for the Union County Retired Educators was Savannah Altenburg with the Oregon Department of Human Services. Altenburg’s duties are many, including attending community meetings, child welfare, self-sufficiency programs, aging population issues, and food distribution for those in need as a few of the services. Her programs cover Union, Baker and Wallowa counties. Savannah works with grocery stores to provide emergency food for those in need. When asked by a member if the food was just for people with children,” Savannah responded, “It is for anyone who is struggling.”

Other areas Altenburg spearheads are the Snap program, steps in programs to learn trades, child protective services, aged and disabled assistance, vocational rehabilitation, or steps to achieve higher education.

In addition to many other duties, Savannah does volunteer work such as the Island City School PTA, and gift wrapping for children at Christmas.

Following the presentation, the Retired Educators presented a check of $120 to the “donated funds to help students in Union County.” Member Anne Rodriguez noted, “Please come to us in case of an emergency or need for children.” After further discussion, members also voted to donate $100 to the Union County Backpack program.
