NORTHEAST OREGON – ODFW is still reminding forest grouse and mountain quail hunters to, if possible, turn in the wings and tails of any harvested birds. There is currently no legal mandate requiring that tails and wings be turned in, but ODFW biologists use these parts to examine bird populations (age, hatch rates, sex ratios) and to help set seasons.

Wings and tails can be turned in at marked collection barrels, usually painted bright blue and marked with yellow signs, at road and highway junctions near popular hunting grounds. Some barrels may also be placed at ODFW offices and other rural landmarks.

When submitting tails and wings, it is asked that hunters, as stated by ODFW:

  • Clip the right wing close to the bird’s body.  Submit the left wing if the right wing is damaged (i.e. worn or missing feathers).
  • Remove all tail and rump feathers by skinning out the lower 2 to 3 inches of the back of the bird and clipping off the tail.
  • Remove all tail and rump feathers by skinning out the lower 2 to 3 inches of the back of the bird and clipping off the tail.
  • Remove all tail and rump feathers by skinning out the lower 2 to 3 inches of the back of the bird and clipping off the tail.
