UNION COUNTY – (Information from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife) As part of their October 19 Recreation Report, ODFW is again reminding elk hunters to stop by Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) check stations when possible. CWD is a fatal, rapid spreading and contagious disease primarily affecting the cervid family (deer, elk, and moose). According to ODFW, there have been no confirmed CWD cases in Oregon, though infected deer carcasses were found in 2021 near the Snake River Border in Idaho.

A check station for Elk will be set up at the Elgin Rodeo grounds, 790 S 8th Ave, from October 29 through 31. The station will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. More information is available at Chronic wasting disease in Oregon | Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (myodfw.com)

In addition, ODFW is asking grouse and mountain qual hunters to turn in bird tales and wings at select collection points (blue barrels). ODFW uses the submitted parts assess bird population and determine seasons length. Collection points are available throughout Eastern Oregon including near Enterprise and La Grande. Specific locations can be found using the ODFW interactive map at Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (myodfw.com)
