SALEM – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is implementing emergency regulations that begin today (Thursday) in several angling zones. The new rules are due to the severe drought that is putting the state’s salmon, steelhead, trout, and sturgeon at risk. The regulations are in effect until Sept. 30, but could be lifted early or extended further depending on conditions.
From today through Sept. 30, all angling for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and trout is closed from 2 p.m. until one hour before sunrise on the entire John Day River and its tributaries; and the Umatilla River and tributaries that are not on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation lands. The closure also applies to Willow and Butter Creeks.
McKay Creek and its tributaries are totally closed for steelhead (both angling and retention) from the McKay Dam upstream, including the reservoir and the creek.
Angling for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and trout is closed from 3 p.m. to one hour before Sunrise on the Walla Walla River and its tributaries.
