Celebrating Life

Ricky Marvin Rhinehart, age 67, of John Day, Oregon passed away on December 17, 2023, at the Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day, Oregon with family at his side.

Ricky was born October 31, 1956, in American Falls, Idaho to Monte and Evelyn (Blom) Rhinehart. During Ricky’s childhood, the family moved many times due to his father’s work in the telephone industry. Ricky attended 22 different schools before his family settled in Lakeview, Oregon. He attended high school at Lakeview High until his junior year. Ricky would get his GED later in life.

He served his country proudly as a Private 1st Class in the Army from August 22,1974 to December 20, 1974, and a member of the Oregon Army National Guard with units in Burns and Bend, Oregon

His family would say Ricky was a “Jack of all trades, but a Master of none” due to the variety of jobs he held during his life. The most memorable ones were a ranch hand for ZX Ranch outside Paisley, Oregon, a mechanic/manager of the 76 Station in Biggs Junction, Oregon, laying miles of telecommunication cable for Henkels & McCoy, working at NAPA Auto Parts, then owning CARS’ PLUS ‘R’ US in John Day with his father before retirement.

Ricky married Sandy Frasier in 1978 with whom he had his two daughters Cyndi and Angela. They would go on to divorce later. In 1991, he married Rebecca Shafer and would go on to adopt their grandson Camden and Eathin. Although they would later divorce, they remained good friends until Ricky’s passing.

Ricky’s life passions were fishing, hunting, camping, family, and Westerns. His love of fishing would grow to a collection of over 80 different fishing poles.

The last great family adventure Ricky had was this year’s cow elk hunt. He and the boys got tags for the first time in eight years. They were able to fill 3 out for the 4 cow elk tags on the weeklong trip. He was able to spend time at elk camp with his mom Evelyn, ex-wife Becky, and family. This trip happened less than a month before Ricky’s passing.

Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Monte Rhinehart, and his grandfather, Ervin Rhinehart.

He is survived by his mother Evelyn Rhinehart of John Day, his daughters, Cyndi Coombs and her husband Jerry of John Day, Angela Thomas and her husband Bill of Renton, Washington, his sons, Camden Rhinehart and his wife Brooklynne of John Day, and Eathin Rhinehart of John Day, his brother Rio Rhinehart of Oroville, California, as well as his ex-wife Becky Rhinehart of John Day. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Summer, Michael, Brianna, and Tayla, and two great-grandchildren: Oakley and Aiden.

A Private Family Celebration of Life will be held December 29, 2023, at the First Christian Church of John Day. Obituary courtesy of Driskill’s Memorial Chapel.
