Clare Proebstel Hayes died at age 83 of cancer. Clare was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Bak­ er City, Oregon, on May 20, 1940, and she passed on to Jesus on October 12, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. on her parents’ ranch in Haines, Oregon. 

Clare spent her career as a school teacher in the Cabrillo Unified School District in Half Moon Bay, California, before re­turning to Oregon in 1997. She was a graduate of St. Francis De Sales Academy in Baker City in 1958 and the University of Oregon in I962. Her husband, Mi­ Michael Hayes, and son, Greg Hayes, were commercial fishermen out of Half Moon Bay and were lost in the ocean in Northern California in 1984 and 1988, respectively. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Helen Proebstel, her husband, Michael Hayes, and her oldest son, Greg Hayes.

Clare committed her life to bring people to the Christian faith and ran several prayer groups in Half Moon Bay, California, and Bend, Oregon. Clare is survived by her sister, Barbara Seymour; son, Joseph Hayes; daughter-in-law, June Hayes; and grandchildren, Cydney and Michael Hayes. 

A Rosary and viewing will be offered at Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place St. in Baker City, on Thursday, October 19, 2023, at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for Clare on Friday, October 20, 2023, at l p.m. at the St. Francis De Sales Cathedral in Baker City located at 2235 1st St. and she will be buried next to her husband in the Haines Cemetery.
