OB/GYN shortage triggers temporary maternity coverage gaps at Walla Walla hospital

WALLA WALLA — Providence St. Mary Medical Center is addressing upcoming gaps in its maternity coverage after a healthcare provider at the hospital, speaking on a condition of anonymity, reported to Elkhorn Media Group that baby delivery services will be unavailable for four to five days in both July and August.

The temporary gaps stem from a shortage of OB/GYNs, which are contractually provided to the medical center by the Walla Walla Clinic. Because the clinic has historically provided these physicians, Providence does not employ its own OB/GYNs in Walla Walla, though it does have some family practitioners who deliver babies.

Hospital officials confirmed they are working with the Walla Walla Clinic on a plan to bridge the coverage gaps.

“Like many rural hospitals across the country, at times we navigate challenges related to physician staffing and specialty coverage, including obstetrics,” Providence said in a statement. “We are establishing clinical protocols and coordinating care processes should a temporary gap in specialty coverage occur.”

Providence stated that patient safety remains its top priority and that contingency plans are in place to safely care for patients, including those who present in labor or need urgent evaluation. The hospital advised expectant parents with concerns to discuss their delivery plans with their providers.
