UMATILLA – The city of Umatilla is reopening Nugent park beginning at 4:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, Oct. 29). The park has undergone significant upgrades supported by a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund in partnership with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
Improvements include a new playground that replaced the aging one; a large outdoor pavilion with power, water, barbecues and picnic tables; an expanded and improved parking area; and a new outdoor kitchen facility. All of the enhancements were built to ensure American Disabilities Act access to all the structures.
Nugent Park is located just outside of downtown Umatilla near transportation, trails and schools. The next improvement for the park, which should be completed by early winter of 2026, will be replacing the boat ramp to meet more modern river access designs and sustainability goals.
“We are thrilled to unveil the newly renovated Nugent Park and invite the community to rediscover this beautiful outdoor space,” Parks and Recreation Director Esmerelda Perches said in a prepared statement. “With improved amenities, the park is now better equipped to serve as a hub for recreation and community gathering.” At the grand reopening event, activities are planned and light refreshments will be served. The park is at 500 Eighth St.
