UNION & WALLOWA COUNTIES – The Oregon Arts Commission has announced another round of grant awardees as part of the Arts Learning grant program. These grants are meant to support projects that provide K-12 students with “responsive learning opportunities in and through the arts,” and foster the exchange of knowledge between artists and educators and positively impact the achievement, skills and attitudes of learners,” as written by the Arts Commission.

In total, 15 organizations were selected across the state, each receiving $10,000 dollars in grant funding for a total of $150,000 dollars. For Northeast Oregon, two organizations made the cut, Art Center East and the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, totaling $20,000 dollars for Union and Wallowa Counties. Brief bios for the funded projects, as written by the Arts Commission, are as follows:

  • Art Center East, La Grande
To support offering eight residency weeks of the Artists in Rural Schools Improv Program to four of the eight Title 1 elementary schools in Union County, blending sequential arts and social and emotional learning for underserved rural youth.
  • Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, Joseph
To support arts education in rural, economically distressed Wallowa County, the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture seeks funding for three interconnected programs: the Charter Art Program, afterschool arts education and the Youth Arts Festival that together provide K-12 students with high-quality, professional arts instruction.
