NORTH POWDER – Following an uptick in reports of dog bites and loose dog complaints, the City of North Powder is once again reminding residents that dogs are not allowed to roam free within city limits. As stated in a recent city newsletter:
“ALL dogs must be on a leash or some form of physical restraint anytime they are on public property, including streets, alleys, parks, or any other public right-of-way. They are not allowed on the premises of a person other than the animal owner without the consent of the occupant or owner of another property.”
Residents are encouraged to keep their dogs leashed or otherwise restrained at all times when in public spaces. Even within residences, dogs kept outside need to be leashed, kept within a properly fenced yard, or otherwise kept from freely leaving the property. As further stated in the newsletter:
“If a dog causes injury, damage, or trespasses, it is not considered to be ‘under control.’”
Any cases of injury or property damage caused by dogs should be reported to Union County Animal Control at 541-963-1017. Note that, per county ordinance, any dog 6 months or older is required to be licensed and receive a rabies vaccine. For north powder residents in particular, no more than three dogs may be kept at a residence, regardless of the size of the dogs or who actually owns them.
Again, any cases of aggressive or destructive dogs can be reported to Union County Animal Control at 541-963-1017. More information on Union County’s animal ordinance can be found at https://unioncountysheriff.us/patrol/animal-control/
