LA GRANDE – As the saying goes, there’s no use crying over spilled milk. A few drivers may have been on the verge of tears last week as they were stuck for around seven hours due to an overturned milk tanker, but thankfully nobody was crying in the hospital. The Oregon State Police (OSP) have released some preliminary information on the June 24 semi-truck crash and highway shutdown near La Grande, including confirming that no-one was injured.
For anyone that, someone, missed the chaos, at around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, multiple emergency agencies responded to milepost 259 on I-84 Westbound, just west of La Grande, for an overturned tanker truck that had fully blocked both westbound lanes. The driver, an Idaho man, was reportedly uninjured and was issued citations for Fail to Drive Within Lane and Careless Driving.
A full summary of the crash and response, as provided by OSP in a recent press log, is as follows:
“E-Crash: On the stated date and time, Troopers responded to a blocking, non-injury crash involving a CMV near MP 259 on I-84 westbound. A CMV hauling milk, struck the right shoulder barriers and overturned, where it came to an uncontrolled rest on its side and blocking the westbound travel lanes.
Milk was leaking and a grass fire started from the impact of the crash. OSP was assisted by Union County Sheriff’s office, La Grande PD, La Grande Fire, La Grande Rural fire and ODOT. The vehicle was towed from scene by Fenns Towing. The driver was cited for fail to drive within lane and Careless driving. I-84 westbound was closed for approximately 7 hours.”
