Nine injured in Interstate 82 rollover crash near Hermiston

HERMISTON — A single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 82 left nine people injured Tuesday afternoon, triggering a mass casualty response that strained local emergency resources.

Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 crews were dispatched at 1:11 p.m. to the accident near milepost 6 on I-82 in Hermiston. Emergency responders arrived to find a single vehicle towing a trailer that had rolled multiple times. The vehicle sustained significant damage and came to rest in the median.

First responders declared a Mass Casualty Incident after learning nine patients were inside the vehicle. Good Shepherd Hospital was immediately notified to prepare for critically injured patients.

The severity of the crash trapped two occupants, requiring firefighters to extricate them from the wreckage before paramedics could begin medical assessments. All nine patients sustained varying levels of injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The incident utilized all on-duty personnel and six ambulances from Umatilla County Fire District No. 1. The surge forced the district to recall off-duty staff to handle other medical emergencies. Mutual aid assistance was provided by a Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District engine and a Boardman Fire Rescue District ambulance.

The Oregon State Police is investigating the cause of the crash. The Oregon Department of Transportation and Umatilla Police also assisted at the scene.

Authorities reminded motorists to safely yield, slow down, and move over for emergency responders operating with lights and sirens.
