WASHINGTON D.C. – On Friday the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Trump’s use of an emergency law to impose widespread tariffs on imports.
The court ruled the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs, which is the Act that Trump invoked when he implemented the widespread tariffs last April.
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Washington) said he supports the courts decision, while reaffirming Trump’s work on trade deals.
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court reaffirms Congress’s authority under Article I of the Constitution to levy tariffs and restores balance between the legislative and executive branches,” said Newhouse in a statement from his office. “Tariffs can be effective in securing new trade deals when used in a targeted manner. I remain committed to working with President Trumps’ administration to secure trade deals that put American farmers, businesses, and consumers first.”
Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) announced Monday that he’s joined 21 Senate Democrats in asking for a refund of the estimated $175 billion in tariffs collected.
