WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Dan Newhouse (R-Sunnyside) felt the wrath from within his party when he was one of the few Republicans voting to impeach President Trump after the Jan. 6 incident at the U.S. Capitol. Now, at least three Republicans have filed or say they plan to file to run against him next year. Two of them don’t even live in the 4th Congressional District.
The two residing outside the district are former gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp of Republic and businessman and former NASCAR driver Jerrod Sessler of Burien. Culp’s home is just east of the district’s boundary. Sessler maintains an office in Prosser.
State Rep. Brad Klippert (R-Kennewick) has also formally announced his candidacy for Newhouse’s seat.
The 4th Congressional District encompasses Benton County to Okanogan County and includes Adams, Franklin, Douglas, Grant, and Yakima counties. Federal laws don’t require congressional candidates to live in the districts for which they are running. They only need to live in the same state.
